My Service Learning
Young Life Salinas Valley
main office is located in Salinas, CA. It is a faith based non-profit organization.
I did my volunteer work with this organization to bring awareness of the importance of being bilingual and bi-literate. Please check out my presentation down below about my service learning experience.
My reflection:
While doing my service learning hours at Young Life Salinas Valley, I had the amazing opportunity to meet community leaders that have a passion for youth advocacy. Getting to know the teens and their struggles in everyday life was an eye-opening experience. There are so many broken families that struggle economically, socially and educational. I was able to be part of a family in this center while we try to impact the lives of precarious teens and their families. A day with these young teens would consist with helping with homework to playing games or simply doing contact work asking them if they are doing okay. Through language I was able to communicate with parents and see how I can help their children succeed in life whether is through school, friends or even a relationship with Jesus. It was an honor for me to be accepted in kids lives and earn the right to be heard. I was not only able to help with communication through bilingual usage and literacy but also cultural immerse myself with the different demographics and cultures of these students. I was able to conduct a small survey of the use of both English and Spanish the the everyday lives of the kids and it was interesting to see the environments they choose to use the spoken languages.
