Reflection: The first linguistic class I ever took at CSUMB was SPAN 313: Introduction to Linguistics. It was a very fun class. Dr. Oliva introduced me into the world of the different types of linguistic studies as well how the anatomy of the mouth is described to make phonetic sounds. I was able to learn about the idea of Universal Grammar and Chomsky's idea that children can acquire language that language is innate for children. I had the privilege to present on the linguistic formation of Chicano Spanish take a look here, this presentation helped me understand words that I use on my everyday life as a identify myself as a Chicana. This class prepared me for Span 303: Advanced Grammar. As Heritage Speaker student I have learned how to orally express my self in Spanish but something I have struggled with is my grammar. Dr. Oliva was very patient with us and he helped freshen our minds with grammar. Here is an example of a homework he gave us to to turn in to the "subjunctive after conjunctions of time".This course helped me learn how to put the accent marks when there is one needed as well as how to use the different types of words that are the same but have a different meaning. One of the most interesting classes I have taken was the the amazing Dr, Becky Pozzi and this was SPAN 395: Special Topics class with a focus on applied linguistics. This class helped me understand an intro into sociolingusitics, pragmatics, methodology and I learned that the most effective way when teaching or learning a language is through natural material that students can apply in the real world. Dr. Pozzi had us present and analyze on class reading and the use of different methodological to teach Spanish. Please take a look at my presentation here, which prepared me to understand pragmatics in second language Spanish.
